A year and a half before I was set to graduate with my Ph.D., I decided I was going to look for a job outside of the traditional academic track. In fact, I didn't even go on the academic market. My short version of a long story is: I defended my dissertation, I moved to Chicago, and within two months of graduation I was employed at a full-time job at the world-renowned Field Museum. Now, three years later, I am proud to work on a campus again as a Corporate and Foundation Relations Officer at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. 

I believe that Ph.D.s need and deserve more information, support, and open dialogue about finding fulfilling and financially viable work after graduation. I've talked about my story and offered advice in the following places:
